Sunday 24th saw a windy return to 49er sailing at MBSC for round 3 of the Super Sunday Sprint. It was tough going for some rusty crews and the scorecard reads pretty ugly from a number of DNF’s!

Dave Gilmour, fresh from his win in the NSW State Championships but not so fresh from his Rotto swim teamed up with Tom Johnson to put on a clinic in the fresh seabreeze.

The day started innocently enough but despite the seabreeze arriving after midday it built quickly in the early afternoon.
In Race 1 Steve and Jordan took the bullet from Dave and Tom to show they meant serious business for the afternoon. It unfortunately proved to be their only shot of the day after not managing to finish the next 2 races. As the breeze built Dave and Tom began to show their class and they lead all the way in both race 2 and 3. Adam Glaskin, sailing with Luke Smith, sailed consistently to be on the podium for all races.

The highlight of the day went to John and Brett who finished 2nd in race 2. A great example of how much you can improve if you are willing to turn up consistently and get time on the water. A great result from these two and we are sure we will see more good races from them before the season is out.

The last 3 races will be held at MBSC on Sunday 10th of March. This is your last chance for a good hit out before the state championships the following week. Points are wide open even for those that have missed a round. In this 12 heat series all boats are allowed 3 drops so if you have missed a round it isn’t too late to push for a good place. Top 6 after 1 drop are as follows;

Results

D. Gilmour & TJ, NB – 31
A. Glaskin & J. Loughridge – 32

After 2 rounds of racing scores are very tight. Luke and Fang in Bubba Gump Shrimp got off to a great start winning Round 1 of the series. Dave Gilmour and Nick Brownie with borrowed boat and sails were hard to beat for round 2 and took that days racing. Both these teams have missed a round of racing but with the 3 drop rule they are still in the hunt.

We have had excellent breezes for the first 2 rounds and we of course hope this will continue on Sunday. At this stage the forecast is looking made to order with a moderate seabreeze.

The atmosphere after sailing has been great with live music, great burgers to re-energise and cheap drinks to help rehydrate!

KARAOKE THIS FRIDAY EVENING!

Chris Jahn and Dot in lieu of twilight sailing have organised a Karaoke and Nachos evening upstairs from 5pm till late. It’ll be a nice night to warm up for Australia Day festivities and the long weekend. It’s $12 per person for a schooner and a plate of Nachos – bring your friends and see you there!

AUSTRALIA DAY– COME DOWN TO MOUNTS!

The club will be open this Saturday for members and their guests to enjoy the Australia Day Sky show and a day of fun on the water. Come along early and grab a spot on the lawn or book a table on the balcony for $10 per person to enjoy the fireworks. Please call the office for more details. The bar will be open from 12midday so there will be no BYO drinks. However, please feel free to bring along BBQ packs and nibbles. Chris Bell and Susie Vandermark (Two of our newest legendary Sharpie sailors) will be singing and playing the guitar from 4pm till late so come and enjoy the atmosphere! For more information go to http://waterborne.net.au/event/mountsbaysailingclub. Parking per car will be $5. Ensure you arrive early to secure a spot and please ensure you observe the marked bays for Flag Officer’s and staff.

SAILING THIS SUNDAY

Junior training for Muddies, Opies and Flying Ants is on from 10.30am to 12.30pm – please come down at 10am to rig your boat. We also have an adults learn to sail course in the Pacers from 9.30 – 11.30am.

GP14’s have a Club Championship Heat and all other seniors have a Club Race starting at 2pm.

3 OF A KIND REGATTA – SATURDAY 16 FEBRUARY

Our famous annual 3 of a Kind is fast approaching! Speak to your fellow team mates, rev up your friends and get a team together! Attached is the Notice of Race – entry forms are due into the office by Wednesday 13th February. 1430 Start time! Live music and BBQ on after racing!

TWILIGHT SAILING

Twilight race number 12 last Friday was the second race of mini-series 3 and seven boats raced in a fresh sea breeze, with some exciting sailing. It was great to see San Juan on the water, who finished first over the line but was relegated to fourth place after a handicap adjustment. Tengara was first, with Akuna 44 seconds behind and third place Yarando crossed the line three seconds later. Well done Andy on the handicaps; there was only five minutes between first and last boat over the line, after taking into account San Juan’s handicap adjustment. There is no formal twilight this Friday, being the Australia day weekend, but the short course sailing will be on so there will be people at the club and there is no reason not to have an informal race if there is any interest.

ADULT LEARN TO SAIL SUNDAY COURSES

Our adult learn to sail courses in the Pacers have been really popular and we’re now taking bookings for our 4th course starting on the 10th of Feb, running for 4 consecutive Sundays. Attached is the information, please contact the office if you’re interested.

FAMILY FUN DAY – SATURDAY 23 FEBRUARY

Join us for the launch of this exciting new family day out! There will be activities for all, including water sports, bouncy castle, face painting and magician and live music to dance the night away!! A gourmet BBQ will be supplied and the boys from Red Alert will bring their Fire Engine down for the day! Sounds like a day not to miss! This will be our main club fundraiser for the season so be sure to keep the date free. Tickets will be available from next week at The Office – $60 per family ticket, $20 adult and $10 per child.

We are planning to have a raffle too - if anyone has anything that they could offer as a raffle prize be it an item or a service please contact the office.

VETERAN’S DAY – SUNDAY 24 FEBRUARY

Following the Family Fun Day is another big day at the club; the annual Veteran’s Day, where guests are invited to skipper a sharpie if they so choose and enjoy a delicious afternoon tea provided by the Club. The Club will also have on display photos and other Club memorabilia. A big thank you goes out to Jake Newby for the work he has put in to restoring some of the old photos; we look forward to seeing them on display on the day. If you are interested in more details on the day and in particular if you would like to skipper a sharpie, please contact the office to secure a position.

ROAD TRAILERS

Please don’t leave your road trailers at Mounts Bay. We need them to be taken home. Thanks in advance.

See you at the bay,

Dot, Lee & Tessa
