Three-of-a-Kind 2008
Three of a Kind 2008 69 Boats started in the 3-of-a-Kind Race at Mounts Bay on Sunday. Early weather reports suggested that it might end up being a long, hot drift around the river but luckily a nice 10-15kt sea breeze came in to make the race a bit more fun. The Catamaran class (Tornados and Windrushes) took off first followed by 42 boats lining up for the Division A Start and then another 20 boats in Division B. It was a spectacular sight to see so many great looking boats on the same start line with hardly a boring design in sight. Speaking of which, n otable no-shows were the 420s, 470s, lasers, hobies and Tasars. I think I heard someone call them soft? Maybe they'll turn up next year and redeem themselves. It was great to see the 505's, Optimists and Windrushes get amongst the action and we really appreciate having them come to our club for the biggest event in the MBSC Calendar. It's great to have an event in which juniors, cats and monohulls can sail together and we would love to see a bigger cat fleet in years to come.   The race was great fun and the atmosphere was fantastic. After all was said and done, the winners were: Division C: Tornados Division B: Flying Ant Team 1 Division A: 49er "Old Team" (That's 2 years in a row now!) The presentations were well attended and the bell received a good work-out! Great prizes were supplied by Ronstan and Commodore Matt Jahn's comments were light hearted and sometimes provocative.... then the festivities really started.   All in all, it was a great day and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

MBSC Wins Youth Teams Racing!
Mounts Bay Wins 2008 Interclub Youth Teams Racing! Eight clubs from all over Perth battled it out over the last couple of months in the annual Interclub Youth Teams Racing series. Mounts Bay was undefeated going into the final round at South of Perth Yacht club last Saturday and in light and shifty conditions managed to beat Shelley and Nedlands Yacht Clubs to seal victory and bring home yet another trophy to the Mounts Bay Trophy cabinet. Congratulations to the team: Leo Showell, James Loughridge, Oscar Thompson, Celia Thompson, Oscar Carlberg, Tim Rossiter, Saxon Oma, Jess Harvey and Oliver Flottman. This is an outstanding result and we are very proud of the 2008 team!

Foundation Youth Cup
Mounts Bay Youth Sailors Narrowly miss out on First Place! The WAYF Youth Cup was held yesterday in the Foundation 36 yachts from RPYC. The MBSC team sailed extremely well in all races and missed out on first place by only 4 points after an umpiring decision saw them drop 2 points and a disastrous wineglass in the 5th race made them drop from 1st place to 5th and put them out of the running for the title. The MBSC team sailed extremely well and were simply unlucky to miss out on first place and come in second behind the RFBYC team. Congratulations to the winners and all competitors, the standard of racing out there was nothing short of spectacular and we should be proud to have such a wealth of young talent in Western Australia at the moment.

MBSC 2nd in INTERCLUB FOUNDATION CUP!
21 Sailors from MBSC took part in eight races in the Interclub Championships at RPYC over the weekend. Eight clubs from around WA took part in a very closely fought series in the Foundation 36 yachts. The regatta format requires that no crew member can sail more than four races and no skipper can helm for more than two races. Also, four out of the six crew on the first day needed to be over 50 years old. This format ensures that the team is a good representation of the depth of talent at the club, not just a select few. Mounts Bay sailors sailed exceptionally well to take out second place overall. Six different skippers took part in the racing and the results were very impressive. Controversial umpiring decisions left the team with a 5 point penalty after a port-starboard incident stripped the team of the lead in the 7th race. However, the team recovered well to win the final race and secure 2nd place overall. Many thanks to all of the crew and support team and especially to Scott Glaskin for organising the teams for each day's racing. "Lady Mounts Bay" (our Start Boat) took spectators out to watch the racing on Friday and Sunday afternoons and the Cheer squad aboard gave the guys a rousing cheer when they crossed the line first in the final race of the series.

Winter Series
The First Winter Series Heat was held last weekend and a record 22 boats attended. The UWA Film crew came along to capture the moment and a promotional video for the Club and for the 29er/49er Nationals will be made out of the footage. Look out for it on YouTube! Prizes are awarded for each Winter Series Race and we will mix up the format throughout the series to make it a bit of fun. It is a great family day out with training in the morning followed by a hot lunch to warm everyone up before the race starts in the afternoon. Open to all fleets INCLUDING KEELBOATS! We had two keelboats last week who went out for a lovely cruise around the river. It's never too cold in Perth, get into it! You'll love it!
