The 2018 Open Bic State Championship was held last weekend over 2 days in generally strong winds except for 1 heat.

34 Entries split into 21 in the Gold fleet and 13 in the Silver fleet for first-timers. The Bics have an Open Division and an Under 13 category.

The racing at the top is pretty serious and included Victorian Champion Hamish Cowell coming over to sharpen up his skills before the Worlds in New Zealand in a couple of weeks.

It is very exciting watching these sailors display outstanding technique and skills, really close strategic and tactical racing and then just confidence to send the boat across the fast reaches with big smiles.

Jenna Everett won the event and Mounts Bay sailors Annabelle Jones placed 4th, Strong finishing Same Williams 5th, Josh Robinson 7th, and Ben Robinson 9th.

All of the Mounts Bay sailors are on the lighter side by ~ 7kg so it was a very good result to keep pushing in the strong breezes.  Some races had multiple boats crossing the line within seconds after 25 minutes races.

In the Silver fleet Mounts Bay’s Kaison Puls finished 2nd, Ben Keen 6th, Henry Williams 10 and Jaxon Hurst got some experience in his first ever races.

There were loads of prizes for results, sportsmanship, coaches awards and even a surfboard lucky dip won by Mounts Bay newcomer Jaxon Hurst

It wasn’t all about the racing.  We had a guest speaker, adventure race (two up and a chocolate bar scramble ) Beach games and a parents race.
